Safety Switch Tripping

What to do if your Safety Switch is Tripping

If you are unsure why the safety switch is tripping off, simply turn the safety switch back to the ON position. If it will not turn on and tripping re-occurs this indicates a fault still exists in your home. Please try these steps:

  1. Unplug every appliance in the home, garage and shed. This includes the refrigerator, dishwasher, range hood, outdoor central heating unit, kettle, toasters and all other electrical appliances around your home. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you remove the plug from the power point, not just switch off the power point at the switch with the 3 pin plug connected to the power point.

  2. Turn the safety switch ON after you have completed step 1. Plug in and then turn on each appliance, one at a time. The safety switch will trip off if a faulty appliance is plugged in and turned on.

  3. If your safety switch will not turn back on after step one is completed, you may have a fault in your wiring system. Contact United Electrical Services to assess the situation. As the fault may be isolated to a particular circuit, switch off all circuit breakers and turn the safety switch ON. Switch each circuit breaker on, one at a time. The safety switch will turn off when the faulty circuit is turned on. This will restore power to the area of the house without a fault, while you wait for your electrician.

Most faults with wiring or appliances will usually occur within 48 hours of the safety switch being installed. If you cannot find any faulty appliances or circuits after completing the above steps, please call our Office for further advice, this will be free of charge.
